Chris Cannon sits down with Paydirt.

Interviewing Chris cannon from Vertigo Venus
By Griffin Swartzell

There are few experiences as rewarding for a fan as live music, but tickets for big name artists tend to be very expensive. Local bands, however, tend to charge far less for tickets, and are certainly excellent. One of the most notorious bands in the Albuquerque music scene is the synth-punk outfit Vertigo Venus, and they’re certainly no slouches in concert. Recently, they released an EP titled Success or Suicide, and have planned a free show at the Coronado mall in Albuquerque on Saturday, August 21 to promote it. Paydirt caught up with Vertigo Venus’s guitarist and one of the founding members, Chris Cannon.

Paydirt: How did Vertigo Venus start/how did you end up with your current lineup?

Vertigo Venus: Vertigo Venus started in 2003, at first Jeff (Cannon, vocals/keyboards) and I had no intention on being a two piece band. Let alone the singers. Growing up in Detroit, we were always in four or six piece bands. We held auditions for singers, drummers, and bass players. No one worked out or never made it to their audition. We had two shows booked in the summer of 2003, with no band.
So, instead of canceling the shows we did the singing and played what we had. We made a record shortly after that, called Sing Pretty. In 2006 we started to write our 2nd record, Run For Your Lives. This time we wanted to record bass and extra keyboards. So Jeff and I chose to hold auditions again (for “Live Guys”). Only two people tried out, Kenny (Cornell) and Buddy. Kenny originally tried out for Keyboards but the first song into his try out, he flat out said “I wanna play Bass.” I said “Okay, there is a bass, pick it up and play this…”
He did just fine. Buddy, we met through our sister Debbie. We did not know buddy played, he never mentioned it until I asked him if he knew any keyboard players. So Buddy tried out and was hired. Now at first Kenny and Buddy were not official members. Jeff and I wanted the band to still be all ours. Things were on a roll and in late 2007, we had the honor of opening up for ChemLab. They had a live drummer that also played to a backing track. Jeff and I thought “Let’s give that a try”.
We were going to try out two drummers, one drummer was too busy in another band. So we tried out Brian Botkiller, whom we already knew from Diverje and Brian Botkiller (solo artist). It worked. In February of 2009 Jeff and I asked the “live guys” to become full-fledged.
Kenny and Brian stepped up, buddy stayed as a “Live Guy”.We had to let Buddy go on May 3, 2010. One month later, Jess (Crockett, keyboards) joined. It’s kind of funny how she got hired on. She got wind that a calendar called New Mexico Pin up rocks! was having a casting call if you will. She told us “I know I am not in the band, but I got in the calendar”. The four of us said “you’re hired” (not in that lame Donald Trump kind of way).

Note: Chris later mentioned that Brian has fully replaced their drum machine as of their new EP, SOS, and that all of their drums from now on will be live.

P: Who are some of your biggest influences, musically speaking?

VV: A lot of bands, Slayer, Samael, MSI, KMFDM, Twisted Sister, The Darkness, and so on. We all listen to different styles so it’s kinda hard to say.

P:Your song “Punk Rock Cheerleaders” seems to crack wise about emo kids and aesthetic punks who “don’t know what it means.” What is your opinion on the state of punk music today?

VV:Punk is whatever it wants to be. Some of it sucks and some of it doesn’t. That’s the great thing about it.

P: Speaking of Punk Rock Cheerleaders, you recently recorded a new, different version for your EP Success or Suicide (SOS). Any reasons behind that you could share?

VV: Oh god yes! The Sing Pretty version was simply out dated. With the new line up it made since to re-record it and make the song kick ass even more.

P: What’s up with your show on the 21st? What’s the goal behind it?

VV:The show on the 21st will be held in Coronado mall in Albuquerque NM for the “Shop ’til you rock” show. Hot Topic has a hand in it. We just played one in Farmington NM and it went great. The goal behind this for us is, have Hot topic put our new record in stores all across the state and then some. This gig could seal the deal. It’s really important that people come to the show and BUY THE NEW RECORD and other merch. Even if fans and friends already have it hahahaha.

P: What’s down the road for Vertigo Venus?

VV: We need a van, BADLY! We have already toured before and played Phoenix enough to get people to come see us. So we really need to sell our new record, then buy a van of some sort so we can tour again. We hope Hot Topic works out, that could be our tour. Going from store to store playing live and selling the new album to people.

P: And, last one for the fans at NMT, is there any chance we’ll see you in Socorro any time soon?

VV: If you book us, we will come. Just don’t feed us Blake’s Lotta Burger, long story.

an open note to blogs sharing our music

I recently sent this letter to a music blog that was sharing a .zip file of all of our music. I had to have the link removed from Megaupload – I have the lives of five people to think about in this band, and I can’t in good conscience allow every single song we’ve ever done to be shared freely via the internet. Plenty of our music is available via our website, myspace, facebook, last.fm, and beyond, entirely for free. We ask that if people wish to listen to that music whenever and wherever they want, that they help us out with a small amount of money to be able to listen to it anytime, and to keep us making that music.

This is a copy of that letter, and it also expresses many of my thoughts on music piracy and how it affects us musicians.

##

Hello,

My name’s brian, I’m the Drummer in/co-manager of Vertigo Venus.

Recently you were sharing a .zip file of all of our currently available music via your blog. While we’re flattered that you’d share our music to the world, we hope you understand that we can’t let our music be freely shared without any links or other information on how to actually purchase it, nor any other information on us.

Please understand this; I’m not a millionaire. No one in this band is. We don’t have a major record label contract. I don’t drive a fancy car, I don’t drink champagne everyday. I work three (or more) jobs to keep myself above water and I do nothing but pour my life into this music. Everyone in this band works so hard, everyday, to make things happen with this music, because we HAVE to be successful at it. I realize that it’s not very “punk” to want to “make it” in the music industry. Unfortunately, most good punks do one of two things; die, or grow up and evolve. We chose the latter.

We just released a new album, and it cost us a lot of money and time to make (one year, and many thousands of dollars, to be exact). I honestly believe that if people like it, then we do deserve some compensation for that; all entertainment is not free, nor should it be. If it were, it wouldn’t be of good quality, plain and simple. It takes money to make good albums, buy instruments, pay engineers, produce CDs, distribute, and promote it. To that effect, it is not an insane thing to ask that there be some return for the entertainment that we provide to people. I don’t walk into someone’s job and steal a candy bar off their shelves because I feel it should be free and that I deserve it simply because it exists. I pay for it because I know that someone, somewhere, out there, had to work to make it, and they have mouths to feed. My small contribution helps with that.

Actually, that’s quite punk – punks have always helped each other out, and been community based. They haven’t always had money, but they have always had comradery.

I know that making a living off of it is going to be hard, but I have to try.

It’s for that reason that I would have to ask that files like this not be shared. You might not believe it, but the piracy of our music does indeed hurt our music sales. Many people think that music shouldn’t be for sale – that because it’s art, a value can’t be placed on it. Unfortunately, we disagree. We believe that artists deserve some monetary compensation for their work for one reason and one reason only; because they can’t keep making it if they can’t eat food. Forget the bullshit about making millions, having gold necklaces and ten cars. All we care about as artists is that we can keep a roof over our heads and some food in our stomachs, to sustain us while we continue to make our art. To that effect, I believe that if someone likes the art that someone makes, the best way they can help to show that is to give that artists some small amount of compensation for what they do.

Plenty of our music is available via our website, myspace, facebook, last.fm, and beyond, entirely for free. We ask that if people wish to listen to that music whenever and wherever they want, that they help us out with a small amount of money to be able to listen to it anytime, and to keep us making that music.

Yes, it seems backwards; art is art, and will be there no matter what, right? You can’t put a value on something that’s simply floating in the air, and not physically available, right? Well, not really. You can put a price on it, because there are people who feel that music deserves some monetary compensation, despite the fact that it is, in reality, an intangible thing. Moreover, again, if you don’t provide artists you respect with some kind of support, they stop making art; plain and simple. They have no obligation to make art for you for free. The fact that 75% of what they make is given away for free is already insulting enough, in my opinion.

In closing, I say again, thank you for feeling that our music is good enough to share with others. I in fact would be ok with providing you with a few free mp3s to distribute via your blog, as long as you’d include links to purchase full albums and/or merch. I’m very glad that our music has reached to your side of the world, and I hope that we can someday play there. Unfortunately, the only way we will play there is if we have paying customers who can help us to get there. Our van isn’t powered by love – it’s still powered by gas, which costs money, sadly. If we can ever create a love-powered van and airplane, I’m sure we’ll be rich enough to not need a love-powered van. How catch-22.

If you are interested in some free mp3s to share via your blog, I will provide you with these. I thank you for taking the time to read this, and keep listening to Vertigo Venus! Take care.

According to the current press bio of Albuquerque’s Vertigo Venus, the musical output of the self-described synth-punk quintet is “like putting The Dead Kennedys, New Order and Twisted Sister into a blender and hitting ‘Awesome.’”

If only everyday life was that simple.

Taking as many cues from punk’s aggression as it does from the fashionable aesthetic of New Wave, the songs off of the latest Vertigo Venus disc hit the listener with a kinetic and edgy flash flood of brash and brawny rhythmic pulses. And just like that, it is painfully evident that this lone wolf of the local music scene, which consists of sibling Jeff and Chris Cannon (vocals/keyboards and guitar, respectively), bassist Ken Cornell, drummer Brian Botkiller and keyboardist Jess Crockett, is all business. Sure, new songs like “Vampire Hunter C” and “Punk Rock Cheerleader” sound instantly derivative of bygone genres. But considering that Vertigo Venus was wise enough to dig into a wide musical spectrum — glam to punk to industrial to goth and well beyond — the proof is in the final product. Bottom line: Success or Suicide could have easily resulted in a hodge-podge of hat tips. On the contrary, this all too brief blast of modern punk frenzy might just breathe new life into your folder of eMusic downloads.
