According to the current press bio of Albuquerque’s Vertigo Venus, the musical output of the self-described synth-punk quintet is “like putting The Dead Kennedys, New Order and Twisted Sister into a blender and hitting ‘Awesome.’”
If only everyday life was that simple.
Taking as many cues from punk’s aggression as it does from the fashionable aesthetic of New Wave, the songs off of the latest Vertigo Venus disc hit the listener with a kinetic and edgy flash flood of brash and brawny rhythmic pulses. And just like that, it is painfully evident that this lone wolf of the local music scene, which consists of sibling Jeff and Chris Cannon (vocals/keyboards and guitar, respectively), bassist Ken Cornell, drummer Brian Botkiller and keyboardist Jess Crockett, is all business. Sure, new songs like “Vampire Hunter C” and “Punk Rock Cheerleader” sound instantly derivative of bygone genres. But considering that Vertigo Venus was wise enough to dig into a wide musical spectrum — glam to punk to industrial to goth and well beyond — the proof is in the final product. Bottom line: Success or Suicide could have easily resulted in a hodge-podge of hat tips. On the contrary, this all too brief blast of modern punk frenzy might just breathe new life into your folder of eMusic downloads.
